Ilex cornuta 'Burfordii'
Burford Holly
Description
This dense, rounded shrub quickly reaches 15" and spreads 10'. It becomes full of lustrous, dark green leaves which will usually have a single terminal spine. The abundance of red fruit in fall and winter will follow a long, warm season and will occur without pollination. Fruit attracts birds. Small white, fragrant flowers appear in spring but are considered inconspicuous. This shrub does best in full or part sun with well draining soil and regular watering, needing more during hot summer spells. It can be used as a foundation plant, hedge, or in coastal areas.

Change spray sprinklers to low-flow bubbler or drip systems. Shrubs and trees are ideal candidates for this type of irrigation because the water is applied directly to the root zones.
